School recycling program award winners announced
June 14, 2017
Another school year is coming to a close, which means our school recycling program will be taking a break over the summer. The Alberta Depot Team would like to thank all the school program participants and wish the teachers and students a happy and environmentally friendly summer.
Schools enrolled in our school recycling program received free recycling infrastructure as well as classroom presentations for their grade 4 students on the importance of beverage container recycling. In return for these free offerings, schools were asked to report the number of beverage containers they returned to the Depot monthly. This year, the schools enrolled in our program reported returning over 350,000 containers to the Depot – that’s the equivalent of more than 70 Albertan grizzly bears!
The top three schools who reported the most returns won cash prizes of $250 each as well as a trophy to display proudly in their school. The schools were divided into small, medium and large school categories based on total number of students.
Here are the winners from the 2017/2018 school year:
Large School Category: Sacred Heart School returned 81 containers per student
Medium School Category: Robina Baker Elementary returned 144 containers per student
Small School Category: A.H. Dakin School in Edson returned 125 containers per student
Schools use the funds they receive from returning beverage containers to the Depots to help fund their field trips and year end celebrations. Some of the schools were able to raise more than $5000 from their container returns – what an amazing impact!
