Let’s Do Even Better, Alberta!
April 29, 2019
Alberta is a pretty great place to call home and we’re all doing everything we can to keep it that way.
Last year, over 2 billion beverage containers were recycled in Alberta.
We think that’s a big deal! But exactly how big of a deal? That many recycled beverage containers are equivalent to the weight of:
That’s something to be proud of!
Can we do better than 9 Calgary Tower’s worth of recycling, though? You bet we can!
327 million beverage containers sold in Alberta weren’t recycled last year.
That means for every 5 containers that are recycled, 1 ends up in a landfill.
Who can swoop in and help? Millennials!
Millennials are some of the most frequent consumers of eco-conscious products and brands.
They’re choosey consumers, as well. They care about where a product comes from, how it’s made, and how it impacts the environment. Being a responsible consumer is fantastic, but the responsibility doesn’t end after making the purchase.
For all the environmental good Millennials do, research shows they are the least likely to return their empty containers to an Alberta Depot for recycling.* We want to help young people do better. By working together, we can make the province an even greater place to call home.
Easy Ways You Can Get Involved
Whether you’re an eco-conscious Millennial or not, here are a few easy ways to make a big impact:
- Host a bottle drive to raise funds for causes you care about.
- Start your own recycling program at work, where you live or in your neighbourhood.
- Collect and return recyclable beverage containers to your local Alberta Depot.
- Donate them to your fellow Albertans in need.
- Remind your friends, family, and colleagues to do the same.
There are 221 Bottle Depot locations across Alberta, find your nearest Depot here.
Which Beverage Containers Can I Return?
Beverage container deposits are based solely on the size of the container —not the material it is made from. There are two different deposit amounts:
- 1 Litre or less = 10 cent deposit/container
- Over 1 Litre = 25 cent deposit/container
Remember … wine boxes and cans, ready-to-drink beverage containers, and kegs are eligible for a refund too.
The returns from beverage container recycling pay off immediately by putting more money back in your pocket. Long-term, the return on recycling is a better future for this great planet and province we share.
The Green Generation
Millennials are known for increased social awareness and responsibility, and we applaud them for their commitment to caring for our planet.
An 86% return rate in 2018 is awesome but why stop there? We’re all for outdoing ourselves - let’s beat our record of recycling 2 billion containers in a year! And in 2019, Let’s Do Even Better Alberta!
