The Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Industry
March 24, 2017
In 2016, Albertans returned a total of 2,357,574,769 beverage containers. That means that 86.2% of all beverage containers sold in the province were returned to an Alberta Depot and recycled. Well done, Alberta!
The beverage container recycling industry in Alberta is one of North America’s most successful and efficient beverage container recycling partnerships. Four separate organizations collaborate to ensure the collection and processing of used beverage containers in the province.
- The Beverage Container Management Board (BCMB) is the recycling system's regulator as mandated by Alberta Environment and Parks
- The Alberta Beer Container Corporation (ABCC) collects and processes standard-sized beer bottles (which are refilled and reused rather than recycled)
- The Alberta Beverage Container Recycling Corporation (ABCRC) collects and processes non-refillable beverage containers so they can be recycled and used again, or made into other useful materials
- The Alberta Bottle Depot Association (ABDA) represents the 217 Depot owners in Alberta
